Local Beauty

So, lately I’ve been really amped (and nervous) for this whole Alaska thing. I’ve sort of been trying to get a lot of Iowa hiking done before I move on to, you know, big Alaska bear-attack hiking.

Well, I’ve explored a lot of the places that central Iowa has to offer as far as hiking. Definitely not all, but I could list quite a few, and anyway, that’s beside the point.

In the last few years I’ve realized some very important things, one of those being that it is really, reeeaaalllly important for a person to appreciate their local beauty. Especially before you try and appreciate another place’s beauty. Let me give you guys a few reasons why.

1. First and foremost, because it’s free and it’s right outside your door.

2. No matter what, there is always something beautiful to see nearby, especially in Iowa. Even if it’s a small creek, and heck, it doesn’t even have to be nature if you’re not into that, some man-made structures can be breathtaking.

3. Local beauty is something that is taken for granted so much. All of the time I hear people say that they want to get out and see the world because they think that they live in some place lame and flat. It’s really a “grass is always greener” thing. The fact is, and I have first hand experience with this, if you don’t appreciate what you already have (Iowa sunsets, for me), you’re not going to appreciate these amazing other things that you want to see so badly.

I can’t stress enough how important it is to love the area you came from before you try to love some place you’ve never been.
